What is ceramic and how is made?

Updated: Feb 7, 2024

The material that has been hardened by combining metal or non-metal raw materials and firing at high temperatures is called ceramic. This material, which is usually created, is called clay or ceramic mud. It is shaped with various designs before being cooked according to the usage area. In our life, it exists in many areas from kitchens to bathrooms, from the electricity industry to space stations, from art galleries to museums, and it makes our lives easier and better.

How is made?

First of all, the prepared ceramic clay is made in accordance with the design it is planned to produce. The product, which is left to dry for a few days after it is finished, is slightly retouched to correct any mistakes and make it suitable for glazing. This completely dried and retouched product is fired in a special ceramic oven at least 760°C. This temperature is the lowest temperature required for the ceramic mud not to melt again by contact with water. The baked product is called a biscuit and this product is now ready for glazing. These ceramic glazes, which will turn into a glassy substance after being fired at it is own temperature, can be in hundreds of colors and various glosses. This product, which is glazed (painted) with the selected colors, is ready for use after it is fired again in the ceramic kiln at a high temperature.
